Vrittis: Choosing Your Inner Blueprint: Returning to Your True Self
In life, we naturally experience a full spectrum of moments—some light and peaceful, others heavy, challenging, or uncertain.
In yoga philosophy, the mind is constantly creating vrittis—the mental waves, thoughts, and emotional impressions triggered by these experiences. Left on autopilot, these waves can easily take over, making us feel as though we are defined by past burdens, stress, or temporary reactions.
But there is a quieter, deeper truth: as long as we know how to return to our real self, we choose what stays as the blueprint of our conscious mind.
Returning to Svarupa (Your Essential Nature)
When we get caught up in the fluctuations of the mind, we temporarily forget who we are and identify with the noise. But when we pause and anchor back into our true self (Svarupa), we step back into the quiet, steady observer within.
From this grounded, centered space, our relationship with our thoughts completely shifts:
- Discerning without judgment: We acknowledge hard experiences without allowing them to dictate our worth or define our future.
- Filtering the mental noise: We recognize which thoughts are klisshta (afflicted, unhelpful patterns) and gently let them dissolve, while nourishing aklisshta (clear, peaceful, and supporting thoughts).
- Building a conscious blueprint: Instead of carrying past pressure forward, we intentionally select the values, wisdom, and Metta (loving-kindness) we want to anchor into our conscious mind.
From Reaction to Creation
Every experience leaves a subtle trace in our consciousness. When we live anchored in our true nature, we stop letting past conditioning write our story.
Seeing the mind clearly isn’t about self-punishment or blame—it is simply the moment we reclaim our clarity.
When you return home to your real self, you realize you hold the pen. You have the gentle power to choose what you carry forward and to design an inner blueprint grounded in peace and Grace.
A Reflection for Your Practice
Take a gentle breath in, drop your shoulders, and rest in your heart space:
“What mental waves am I allowing to settle today? What am I ready to release, and what peace am I choosing as my blueprint?”
A Brief Meditation: Returning to Your Blueprint
1. Settle into the Body
Find a comfortable seated position. Rest your hands gently on your lap or place one hand on your heart and the other on your lower belly. Allow your spine to rise naturally, like a column of light, while dropping your shoulders away from your ears.
2. Observe the Waves (Vrittis)
Close your eyes or soft-gaze down. Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling the belly and chest expand. As you exhale through your mouth with a quiet sigh, let go of any tension.
Notice the thoughts or memories floating in your mind. Without pushing them away or holding onto them, view them simply as gentle waves on the surface of the ocean. You are not the waves; you are the calm depth beneath.
3. Anchor in the True Self (Svarupa)
Shift your attention down into your heart space—the vast, steady center where effort ends and peace begins. Take a few deep, unhurried breaths here. Feel the stillness that remains unchanged regardless of what happens around you.
4. Choose Your Blueprint
With every inhale, breathe in clarity, ease, and Metta (loving-kindness). With every exhale, release any old pressure, expectations, or unhelpful patterns. Mentally repeat this quiet affirmation:
“I return to my true self. I release what no longer serves me, and I choose peace as my blueprint.”
5. Return with Grace
Rest in this quiet stillness for a few breaths. When you feel ready, take a deep, nourishing breath in, gently wriggle your fingers and toes, and open your eyes, carrying this clear inner foundation into the rest of your day.
