Meditation as a Way of Living
For me, meditation has never been limited to sitting still on a cushion. It is about bringing presence into every moment of life — whether I am moving, standing, speaking, or listening. True meditation is a living practice, fully integrated into daily life.
Our lives are filled with thoughts, words, and actions. But how often do we pause and ask ourselves: Are these really my thoughts? Is this my voice speaking, or am I echoing expectations and patterns from the outside world? Does this voice come from my heart, from a deep inner place, or from habit and conditioning? Are my actions conscious decisions, or automatic responses shaped by old routines?
Bringing mindful attention to these questions is a way of connecting with our inner call — the purpose we have come to fulfill in this life. It is the process of discovering whether our preferences, our habits, and our choices truly belong to us, or whether we have simply inherited them from others.
When we begin to notice these patterns, we can slowly bring awareness into every thought, word, and action. Walking, working, cooking, listening, or even breathing can become a practice of being aware. The key is to pause and ask ourselves: How present am I right now? How aware am I of what I am thinking, saying, and doing?
Through this continual mindfulness, our mind becomes clearer, our heart more aligned, and our life more authentic. We begin to hear our inner call more distinctly, and our actions naturally flow from this place of conscious choice. This alignment is what makes life meaningful, ethical, and in harmony with our true self — what we call Dharma.
Practical Tips to Connect with Your Inner Call
- Pause and Reflect: Several times a day, stop for a few breaths and ask yourself: “Is this thought, word, or action truly mine?” Observe with gentle awareness.
- Mindful Journaling: Write down your daily thoughts, decisions, and feelings. Reflect on which come from your heart and which are influenced by others or habit.
- Heart Check-In: Before making a decision, ask: “Does this choice resonate with my inner truth?” Be fully aware of your intuitive response.
- Daily Breath Practice: Even for 3–5 minutes, focus on your natural breath. Let your mind settle and notice subtle guidance from within.
- Slow Actions Practice: Pick one daily activity — like walking, cooking, or washing dishes — and do it with full presence. Ask yourself: “How conscious is this action?” and “What am I truly expressing through it?”
- Evening Reflection: At the end of the day, review moments when you felt most present and most disconnected. Note insights about your inner call and areas to bring more mindful attention.
Meditation is not an escape from life. It is a path to live life with full presence. Each breath, each thought, each word, and each action is an opportunity to return to our inner clarity and purpose.
Anapanasati — mindfulness of breathing — is a reminder that being aware and present is always available. One breath at a time, we can reconnect with ourselves, ask these essential questions, and live with intention and conscious attention.
